1. The inclusion of consciousness in self-designing systems.
2. Organizations as conscious participants actively involved in self-designing processes.
3. Cross-boundary processes as explicitly addressed and infused with information.
4. The conscious self-management of a flexibly designed organization.
5. The internal commitment of active participants.
6. The empowered relations among active participants.
7. The eternal self-transformation of flexibly designed organizations.
The preceding Quantum Organization characteristics are very different, in some instances outright opposite of the Newtonian Organization.
The Quantum Organization, when compared to the Newtonian Organization is a conscious organization which is in a continuous state of growth, evolution, and further awakening. Consciousness is recognized, embraced, and cultivated.
The Quantum Organization is not designed by leadership and passed down to members within the organization, it is designed from within by empowered participants and therefore increases the likelihood of participant acceptance and success. Commitment is required from all within the organization, and once designed, the organization is self-regulated from within and self-organizes over time based on the needs of the organization.
The Quantum Organization addresses the white space inherent to Newtonian Organizations to reduce the probability of tasks falling between the cracks of functions – this is accomplished through specifically addressing and eliminating white space as well as designing in overlapping responsibility between functions.
Finally, the Quantum Organization is a continuous state of renewal and reinvents itself in terms of individual members and processes. This leads to an overall increase in consciousness which drives the organization forward, or as Ralph Kilmann states:
“Ultimately, this significant gain in useful knowledge about self-transformation adds to the greater reservoir of universal consciousness – and human evolution.”
The continuous renewal and evolution of the individuals within the organization and the Quantum Organization as a whole contributes to the overall well being of the human species.
Quantum Organization Structure
When reviewing the structure of a Quantum Organization, the following should be noted as compared to the Newtonian Organization as outlined by Ralph Kilmann:
1. Shaded boxes (blinders) are replaced with dotted lines representing interrelationships and interconnections.
2. The white space is converted into the living breathing global economy: Mother Earth.
3. The structure of this new organization is the evolving paradigm of the mind.
The Quantum Organization is ideal for a global, competitive economy. To build a company in such a manner is no small task. It consists of either locating individuals who are in alignment with the organizational structure or training newcomers – which equates to changing the way they view themselves, their work, and the world around them.
Quantum Organization Advantages
The competitive advantages are great. Consider the ability to structure a company as a living, evolving, self-sustaining, and self-organizing organism. Changes to the external global environment are of little threat to such an organization – the Quantum Organization would simply anticipate and self-organize with the external environment.
Imagine an organization of committed individuals who were strong not only in and of themselves, but who were committed to the teams within the organization and to the company as a whole. “I” becomes “we”.
Imagine the elimination or lack of white space. No longer would there be cross-functional discord, finger-pointing, or overlooked tasks. There would be consistent cooperation across functions and maximized workflow and processes. Everyone would inherently know what was best for themselves and the organization – which would be in alignment. If they didn’t know the best course of action, they would know who to partner with to bring about what was best for the company.
By continuously reinventing themselves and the organization as a whole, the Quantum Organization would evolve humankind. This would allow for an inherent social good which would just occur naturally and through the course of normal business.
The Quantum Organization is something that is not easily copied. It is a competitive advantage that will take great time and effort to build, however this would truly set the business apart from others. The Quantum Organization is said to lead to increased participant satisfaction, higher innovation, and greater overall effectiveness.
If the Newtonian Organization is about mechanization and control, the Quantum Organization is about consciousness and self-organization.
