The University of Nicosia is offering a free digital currency massive open online course (MOOC). The course is Introduction to Digital Currencies and is the first course in the MSc in Digital Currency program.
A couple of interesting things here. The first is that there is virtually no barrier to taking the Introduction to Digital Currency course. You can sign up for the course independent of the program, the course is free of charge, and it is offered online. The only requirements is that you have enough understanding of English to understand the lectures and participate in the exercises. So this is a great opportunity to learn more about digital currencies if you have an interest or believe this is something that may interest you.
Another interesting aspect is that should you desire to enroll in the full MSc program you can actually pay for it via Bitcoin.
I admire the “all in” approach of University of Nicosia. Where other universities are considering and studying the implications of digital currencies, University of Nicosia is taking action by offering a program, allowing for payment in digital currency, and offering a free trial via their online MOOC. A move with some risk, but it stands to position them as the authority in Bitcoin academics and the other universities may have to scramble to catch up. This appears to be, in my opinion, a truly entrepreneurial move.
I have registered for the Introduction to Digital Currencies course and hope to spread the word to others. The first course starts in May 2014 and there is a link below to the information page.
